LOCUST CONTROL MEASURES
DUTY STATION: GALMUDUG STATE – SOMALIA
REPORTING TO: THE PROJECT MANAGER, COMMUNITY – BASED CONTROL OF DESERT LOCUST
INFESTATIONS IN GALMUDUG STATE, SOUTH CENTRAL SOMALIA
DURATION: OVER A PERIOD OF TWO MONTHS (50 TRAINING DAYS AND TRANSPORT DAYS)

JOB SUMMARY
CPD is seeking the services of Professional Trainer to train Village Desert Locust Control Group
(VDLCGs) in Five Districts of Galmudug State on locust control measures, surveillance, and
reporting and community sensitization. The training will be held in 10 Settlements for each of the
Five districts of Adado, Abudwak, Dhusamareeb, Balanbale and Galkayo.

SPECIFIC ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
 Help CPD project teams in the development of Training Manual which should be in line
with FAO training manuals for Locust control.
 Train a total of 535 trainees consisting of 100 VDLCG members, 5 government officials
and 2 Community Mobilizers from each of the 5 Districts.
 Effectively coordinate the training schedule and facilitate all the session.
 Ensure effective participation of the trainees in both the theoretical and practical aspects
of the training.
 Ensure the activity means of verification is well documented.
 Help projects teams meet the activity’s expected deliverables and objectives and in
meeting its indicators.
 Produce a detailed activity report explaining clearly the employed methodology.

TRAINING FOCUS AND CONTENT
The core training will focus on:
 A practical explanation of the desert locust cycle (including the breeding, hopper bands
and swarms).
 The mechanical control methods and its targeting of the pods and hopper bands
destruction.
 Surveillance methods with community inputs in identifying locations of locust invasion
and the locust life stage cycle for effective control planning.
 Monitoring and reporting of destruction of crops and pastures for early remedial
interventions.
 The training will be crucial in building the capacity of the communities as the first
responders and critical in the subsequent actual planned control and surveillance
activities.
 Encourage women participation.

REQUIREMENTS
 Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Technical Education, Political Sciences, Business
Administration, Agricultural Economics, Development Economics, Rural Sociology, Food
Security, Nutrition, or Related Fields;
 At least Seven years of relevant experience in technical cooperation’s related activities,
and trainings relating to food security and nutrition, agriculture and rural development,
monitoring and evaluation in Somalia.
 Experience of working in politically unstable situations and knowledge of Somalia, its
culture and political background and more so Galmudug State.
 Conceptual understanding and practical experience of Desert Locust Surveillance, Control
and Awareness creation.
 Strong analytical and report writing skills, including experience in designing Agricultural,
Livestock, Food Security, monitoring and evaluation of frameworks.
 Knowledge of gender dynamics and analysis in the Somalia context.
 Ability and interest to travel within the project areas in Galmudug State.
 Ability to liaise with various stakeholders from government and public and private
sectors.
 Readiness to fully comply with CPD/DKH policies and procedures.
 Fluency in spoken and written Somali and English
 Proficiency in basic computer applications.
